I am currently emailing a friend I made on the warmaster forum I recommend if your like warhammer to go their firstly because its a great place to meet like minded people and broaden your horizons regarding different areas of wargameing.

other things i suggest are blogs themselves of which i could recommend one mainly

Anyway moving on from this back to the topic at hand i talk alot about the small games this is where i feel the atmosphere and the grim dark as a story can be told and its why i push it so much im not big on super competitive lists i like a more general approach that looks to bring what you want and hopefully play those simmiler minded sometimes if you dont its a challenge set the seen as one of a despret last stand and have a secondary objective say to have something on the board at the end of the game this is what i have alwase wanted in 40k but that dosent mean being a general commander over viewing the bigger battle fields cant have this i suppose the focus cannot be on one individual because as the game simulates so well its a dark world where people die ever moment and there is no brake from the reality of life in the dark world of 40k and it is evident that from this in the big battles where even if you did have a squad with a narative the could be wiped out so what is your job as comander?
This is where narrative can get in the way you want to win but maybe that squad you feel from the fluff wouldn't do the sensible thing games are unpredictable by nature so why not take a few risks including units that are throw away and add a element of risk and life to the board make the games more interesting and challenging not that i say this well help you win of coarse but wining isent alwase the aim dieing sometimes can be this is where multiple game god forbid you have the time in big games is a big deal because that tell a big story where small ones develop charicter and inform big games.
Finally sometimes just go nuts big games are fun full of smack talk and banter so why not kick back and enjoy as my friend dose theirs no harm in it and while I am all about the narrative that dose not mean the game cant tell a story of its own what i hope i have done is plant a seed of interest in different ideas and ways to keep the game living.
Happy wargammeing!
